Burnley sign Lowton from Villa; Firmino set for Liverpool move

Burnley F.C. have completed the signing of Matt Lowton from Aston Villa on a three-year deal.

Burnley F.C. have completed the signing of Matt Lowton from Aston Villa on a three-year deal.

Lowton, 26, will replace Kieran Trippier, who joined Tottenham Hotspur on a five-year deal last week, at Turf Moor.

The 26-year-old defender, formerly of Sheffield United, gradually fell out-of-favour at Villa Park following the appointment of Tim Sherwood, making just 12 English Premier League appearances for the Birmingham-based club in 2014/15.

“Things went pretty quickly from when the club showed a bit of interest,” Lowton told the club’s official website. “Straight away I said yes because I just want to go and play football every week.

“It’s been a little frustrating lately but the manager here said I’d play a lot of football and I’m really looking forward to getting started.

“I had two years left on my contract, but I haven’t played enough football in the last year and I’ve worked hard growing up to be a footballer. I don’t want to come on a Saturday and watch other players do it.

“There were a few clubs interested, but Burnley belong in the Premier League and hopefully I can come in and help us get back up.”

Lowton added: “I knew Kieran Trippier was leaving and there was a space
where I play, so it was a bit of a no-brainer really to come and play football for a team that is pushing for promotion.

“I had a fantastic experience at Villa and the first season I was there I played pretty much every minute of every game. I got so much experience up there with the players I played alongside and the managers and coaches.

“Although it hasn’t worked out as much as I would have liked, the experience I have gained there has been priceless and hopefully I can take that into next season.”

Burnley are priced at 5/1 to win promotion to England’s top-flight next season.

Firmino set for Liverpool move

Liverpool have agreed a deal with Hoffenheim for the transfer of Brazil international forward Roberto Firmino, according to Sky Sports sources.

The Reds have held talks with Carlos Bacca, Firmino, Salomon Rondon this week, with the Brazilian on the verge of joining the Merseysiders.

“We understand that they have agreed a deal with Hoffenheim for attacking midfielder Roberto Firmino,”  confirmed Sky Sports News HQ reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

“He is at the Copa America in Chile at the moment, but he has given Liverpool a verbal undertaking that he will join in the next 24 hours.

“Sources in Germany have also told us that the deal is as good as done.”

Firmino, who had previously been linked with Manchester United, tallied seven goals and 10 assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances for Hoffenheim last season.
