(GSM) – Bursaspor claimed their maiden Turkish league title on Sunday as Fenerbahçe’s slip-up at home allowed them to claim first with a 2-1 win over Besiktas.
Fenerbahçe drew 1-1 at home with Trabzonspor to fall to second place.
Bursaspor came into the day a point behind Fenerbahçe, needing a win and some help to come out on top.
Things started well for Bursaspor as Argentine midfielder Pablo Batalla fired a shot past Rustu Reçber to make it 1-0 on 32 minutes.
A minute before the break, it was 2-0 when Besiktas defender Ibrahim Toraman misdirected the ball into his own net.
Knowing Fenerbahçe were in line to drop points, Bursaspor were careful not to give up the lead, though Ugur Inceman’s goal for Besiktas in the 88th minute made it a nervy finish.
But the title was shortly confirmed after the draw in Istanbul.
Fenerbahçe started well with Dani Güiza’s goal in the 14th minute, but Trabzonspor equalized nine minutes later through Burak Yilmaz.
Despite constant pressure, the Istanbul side never managed the breakthrough, handing the title to Bursaspor.
