Cahill out to defy critics

New Chelsea signing Gary Cahill said that he wants to prove his critics wrong after transferring from strugglers Bolton.

The 26-year-old completed his move earlier this month for an estimated seven-million-pound fee and Cahill said he is looking forward to his new challenge at Stamford Bridge.

However, Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas left the England international out of his squad for the weekend’s 0-0 draw against Norwich at Carrow Road believing that he needed to train with his team mates for longer before playing.

It means that Cahill – who has been capped seven times by his country – could make his debut for his new team during next week’s FA Cup fourth round tie at QPR.

Cahill admitted that moving to a club such as Chelsea will mean that his performances will be under intense scrutiny but insists he is ready for the challenge.

“I’ll be under the microscope more now, especially when I make mistakes,” he told the People.

“I saw what was said on Match of the Day and people are entitled to their opinion. I don’t have a problem with that.”

“Sometimes though if people don’t watch you every week they just see results and it affects their opinion.”

“If people do criticise me here I won’t take it to heart, that’s for sure. All that will happen if people doubt me now is that I will prove them wrong.”

“I’ve never had anything easy. Even when I have been with England’s younger age groups I was a third or fourth-choice selection.”
