Former Everton star Tim Cahill has left MLS side New York Red Bulls for Chinese Super League giants Shanghai Shenhua.
Red Bulls confirmed the Cahill’s exit from the club on Monday, and hours later, the Australia international confirmed he will be moving to the Far East.
“This decision was not made lightly, and it is the result of many conversations between our staff, Tim, and his agent,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Ali Curtis.
“After much deliberation, we have agreed that this decision is best for all involved.
“We thank Tim for his service to the organization. He positively impacted the growth of the beautiful game in the United States, MLS and for the Red Bulls.
“We are pleased that Tim will continue to be an ambassador for Red Bull moving forward.”
Cahill, 35, is absolutely delighted to start a new chapter in his career in Shanghai after leading Australia to the 2015 AFC Asian Cup title last month.
“I’m proud to announce that next move in my career will be in China with Shanghai Shenhua,” Cahill told Fox Sports News.
“China is a growing market in football. You can see with the recent game that we played against China [the Asian Cup quarterfinal], millions and millions of people watched it.
“I’m at an age that I want to give back to football, as well as still play at a high level.
“I’ll make an impact in China, I promise you that. On the pitch.”
During his time in the United States, Cahill bagged 14 goals in 62 MLS appearances for Red Bulls.
Lennon joins Everton on loan
Everton F.C. have completed the signing of Tottenham Hotspur winger Aaron Lennon on loan for the rest of the season.
Lennon, 27, had been attracting interest from several English Premier League clubs, including Hull City, over the past few weeks.
Although Spurs were willing to part ways with the 27-year-old on a permanent basis, a loan will suffice, for the time being.
“We all know what Aaron will bring to our squad with his experience and know-how, his involvement with England in two World Cups and the landmarks he has set in the Premier League,” Martinez told the club’s official website.
“At 27, Aaron will be a really important asset to our squad and he will represent a real boost in terms of attacking options from now to the end of the season. His pace and trickery will fit in well at Goodison.”
Lennon tallied two assists in nine league appearances, albeit just three starts, for Spurs this season.
