According to reports in England, Gary Cahill could leave Chelsea in January – but not on a permanent deal. The former England international and current Blues defender has been on a steady decline over the course of the last few years, to the point where many fans have already written him off as being ‘over the hill’. Despite that, his long service to the club seems to have earned him a ‘stay of execution’ if you will, which means that he could leave on a loan deal when the transfer window opens.
A series of Championship clubs, and potentially even lower league top flight clubs, will likely be looking into the possibility of bringing Cahill in on some kind of short term loan. If not then he could always wait it out with Chelsea to see if he gets another chance with Maurizio Sarri, but that doesn’t seem particularly likely right now.
