Ramon Calderon confirmed he had resigned as president of Spanish champions Real Madrid in a news conference at the Bernabeu. “Against the recommendations of my board I have decided to step down from the presidency,” he said. “I have committed errors but not irregularities. I go with my head held high.”

Calderon was elected in 2006. Marca newspaper has reported that the 57-year-old lawyer manipulated a general assembly vote in December. Vice president Vicente Boluda will take over the president’s duties until a snap election is called.
