(GSM) – Former Arsenal and England defender Sol Campbell has been linked to a move to Manchester United according to a host of news reports. United are eying a move for the experienced center-back as a solution to their injury-plagued defense.
Campbell is without a club following his ill-fated move to League Two side Notts County. The player quit the League Two outfit after only one game and has been available for a free transfer move ever since.
With defenders Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown, Gary Neville, John O’Shea, Jonny Evans, Rafael da Silva and Fabio da Silva currently injured, Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad is living a real injury crisis. This crisis may tempt the Scotish manager to jump at the possibility to sign Campbell for free.
Ferguson has a history of successful bargain buys with Laurent Blanc and Henrik Larsson particularly proving to be among the most influential of his cheap purchases.
Fergie’s latest bargain buy was Michael Owen, who joined The Red Devils from relegated Newcastle United on a free transfer this summer. Owen scored all three of Manchester United’s goals in his side’s latest Champions League clash against German champions Wolfsburg with the tie ending in a 3-1 score in favor of the English champions.
Campbell has had an illustrious career in England that began at Tottenham Hotspur in 1992. Campbell then joined Spurs’ London-rivals Arsenal in 2001 before moving to Portsmouth after 5 seasons with The Gunners.
After reviving his career at Pompey, Campbell joined Sven Goran Eriksson’s Notts County in the summer of 2009.
Should Campbell join Manchester United when the transfer window opens again in January, he could face his former clubs Arsenal and Portsmouth soon afterwards.
