Borussia Dortmund host Borussia Monchengladbach at the Westfalenstadion in the German Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon, in a must-win encounter for Thomas Tuchel’s side given their recent woes.
Dortmund have been inconsistent of late which has seen them fall considerably short in the title-race, but with Gladbach having the second-worst away record in the division, can BVB bounce back this weekend?
Dortmund’s title aspirations hang in the balance
Bayern Munich aren’t even top of the German Bundesliga table this season but Borussia Dortmund haven’t been able to take advantage. The latter are currently six places and nine points adrift of leaders RB Leipzig after 12 games, and have suffered as many defeats this season as they did after 32 Bundesliga games in 2015/16. Dortmund started so well in 2016/17 with four wins from five in the league, but things spiraled in autumn.
BVB’s season unraveled following a winless October that saw Tuchel’s side pick up just three points from four games against Bayer Leverkusen, Hertha Berlin, Ingolstadt and Schalke 04, but their form on the road has been a problem throughout the season. Dortmund have suffered three defeats and a draw from six away outings in the division, and have a near-impossible task to make up the ground in the title race.
Monchengladbach’s form should see Dortmund respond
Ahead of Saturday’s clash, Borussia Dortmund are coming off the back of a league defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt but they will fancy their chances of quickly returning to winning ways with how poor Borussia Monchengladbach have been of late. The visitors have gone seven games without a win in the German Bundesliga, scoring just two goals during the barren run.
Currently 13th in the division, Gladbach are perhaps the best opposition for a misfiring Dortmund to face to return to form, but Tuchel won’t take them for granted. His side have already fallen short to Ingolstadt who occupy a relegation place so BVB can’t go into Saturday’s clash thinking they’ve already won.
Nevertheless, Dortmund can’t entertain anything less than a win if they want to keep in touching distance of the sides at the top. Tuchel’s men are just three points adrift of a top-three spot in the table which would guarantee them Champions League football the following season, but they still have work to do. Borussia Dortmund are 1/2 to win against Borussia Monchengladbach in Saturday’s German Bundesliga clash at the Westfalenstadion. Can they deliver?
