Can Manchester United and Real Madrid make up over Ronaldo?

OK, imagine the following scenario. Some time ago, my family tried to steal your most precious asset. My family and your family fell out big time and had a very public row. Now, I am telling anyone who cares to listen, that I am going to try to steal your most precious asset again. At the same time, I am holding up an olive branch of peace and asking you to be my friend. I would imagine that you are quite likely to tell me to f**k off!

Far fetched

Although that scenario sounds a little far fetched it is exactly what Florentino Perez is doing to Manchester United about Cristiano Ronaldo. I really had to smile when I saw that Perez was promising that he will not fall out with United over Ronaldo.

Since he returned to his role as President of Real Madrid Perez has made absolutely no secret of his wish to target the signing of Ronaldo and take him to the Bernabeu.

Last Summer, when Real and United fell out over the player Perez was not involved. Despite that, he would have to have been living on the moon to be unaware of what went on.

Rejected

As you will recall, Fifa rejected a complaint from United last June that Real’s public attempts to sign Ronaldo amounted to an illegal approach. Although the complaint was rejected, Fifa warned Real against inducing the player to breach his contract in the future.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson denied in December that there was any secret arrangement to sell Ronaldo at the end of the season.

“Do you think I would enter into a contract with that mob? No chance. I would not sell them a virus. Sometimes I get really annoyed with them. But we know their game. I think we should play ours and ignore them.”

Perez has claimed that Real could exploit a clause in the Ronaldo’s contract which runs until 2012.

“From what I hear, there is an agreement between the player and his club. If one day there is a chance of him playing for Real Madrid, that would be an honour for us.”

With three years still to go on his contract it sounds pretty much like Real are trying to induce him to breach his contract in exactly the way Fifa warned them not to.

The sanctimonious way in which Perez is trying to offer a hand of friendship towards United is hardly likely to be appreciated by Sir Alex Ferguson and the United management team.

“If I had to choose between the friendship with United and Ronaldo, I would choose the friendship. Plus, I have never said that Cristiano will arrive in June. That is an arrogant and false statement. I shall be talking with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and chief executive David Gill to build bridges.”

I doubt whether he has the expertise required to build a bridge as big and complicated as that one!

Good relationship

Having said that, Perez, unlike Calderon his predecessor, has maintained a good relationship with his United counterparts since the days of the G-14 group. It may also be interesting to note that Fergie has not yet responded to any of the comments made by Perez. Could that be because Fergie likes Perez? Could it be because he has come to terms with losing Ronaldo? Could that be because he knows Ronaldo is going nowhere? Could that be because he is now quite happy to lose Ronaldo for the sort of ridiculous money that Real will have to pay?

Deals have been done relatively trouble free between the clubs with David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelroy and Gabriel Heinze all leaving Old Trafford for The Bernabeu. It is a pretty safe bet that Cristiano Ronaldo may well join that list of moves but it is an even safer bet that it will not be trouble free.

Course it was never a secret that Perez wanted Ronaldo at the Bernabeu, starting in June, and now he gets his wish. Still Fergie said he wouldnt sell a virus to that mob, so why did he sell Ronaldo?
Im guessing he decided United could do with the money moneybags Real Madrid had…..

And that would be a pretty good relationship, but a shaky one too, if ManU ever refuses to hand over a player Real Madrid wants.

    Sorry for goin off topic.
I dont usually focus on the finanacial stuff, but both owners probably think that was a good deal.
I think that ManU and RealM will always be two beans in a pod, especially after this transfer saga. Man U provides the players and Real the moolah. 😉

Just to stay focused on the topic here…

On a business level, I think Man U and Real have more than made up for their troubles……12m invested and 68m profit in Man U’s pocket….Real can finally pimp Ronaldo for 50% of his image rights (plus win a few more games, sell-out tickets and jersey’s etc.). Both of these teams are heavily burdened with debt and this deal has benefited both clubs significantly in terms of the finances and growth of the club.

I think the standard has now been set between the two teams and they both know how to play together…on a personal level I think it would burn anyone to have their prize taken from them, but Real sweetened the deal as much as they could to make it easier to swallow for Man U.

I’m sure the owners are looking back saying that was a tough ordeal, but they are now very happy with the outcome.

If Ronaldo does well in the new season, then i doubt it will really take 2 or 3 years to bring Real back to when it absolutely dominated back in the 60s and 70s. It might happen instantly.
If Ronaldo doesnt do as well as he hoped and as we footie fans thought, than he should either return to ManU or move to………. I dont know…… well, MLS would be a pretty good choice, but he might jes turn into the Portuguese version of Beckham, when he was at LA Galaxy. Lets hope he doesnt if he does come over here.

My apologies to the MLS fans – my dislike for Real Madrid got the best of me there.
But, i’ve changed my mind about this whole Real Madrid affair over the last 48 hours……and watching “Goal II” kind of inspired this (go rent it if you haven’t already) – Santiago Munez is my hero!
Real is obviously dreaming big here and I admire that. Much like Arsenal and Liverpool…and all the other teams out there mobilizing to take over that #1 spot.
Real is desperate and have taken desperate action. The young stars they are recruiting are feeling that sense of excitement again to bring back glory to the club that they’ve all probably dreamed of playing for while growing up. It’s a good feeling and I can understand why CR is beginning to feel stale – he has (or he feels) he has brought the glory back to United and wants to relive that passion to do it again with Real.
Despite his tactics in carrying out this agenda, I think it’s great career vision…if he can conquer the football world with Real within 2 or 3 years now, then maybe there is another team, or league, he can also help to win.
Hopefully (as I am a big CR card collector) we will all one day look back and say he did it at Man U, he did it at Real and he did it at ???….and so on. That would really make my collection priceless…as well as provide some great entertainment along the way.

Chelsea fan, Please donot insult MLS like that, especially with the 30 year old Ronaldo piece. That felt very insultin to me, as an American and MLS fan.
Great post though, yet the Blue Bulldogs- I call em that- wont be chasin us nearly as much as Liverpool and the Gunners! : P
Ronaldo had better be able to get vengeance on Barca for both United, Chelsea as they won in the Cl semi by the f—in away gol rule, and for Real. If not, he had better come back.

CR should go…Man U will get more in return to develop the club for long-term purposes…Real is only in for short-term gain…their new president will leave it in shambles for the next one who takes it over.

Platini is having a fit over the transfer fee…but, if Real is willing, Man U should slap them with an extra 20, 30, 40, or 50million tax and show some real mob tactics….haha.

CR has let many supporters down…and I don’t think he will be any more marketable at Real than he was at Man U. Without a doubt, his jersey will sell and all that good stuff, but can you imagine how many people around the world are turned off by Ronaldo b/c of this whole affair with Real? Remember, on Man U, CR is loved and wanted around the world…everybody wants a piece….but by cheating on Man U with Real, CR’s true colors are exposed and i’m not sure that anyone will be as greedy now for him…except Real of course.

We should respect his wishes to play-out his childhood dream…if this is where his head is at, so be it. Men like Kaka and Messi, who exemplify professionalism and undying loyalty, show great character and are respected and wanted by everyone. Hopefully CR can mature to this level one day…but if not, so be it. We all love the CR we want him to be…..but now, we just have to let him be.

This is a great challenge for CR to play alongside Kaka and other greats…and also a great challenge to be directly competing against World Player of The Year runner-up Leo Messi and reigning treble champs Barca. There is much pressure on the boy’s shoulder’s now to bring glory back to Real….and if Real should still find themselves losing, ay-yi-yi….it will not be good for his career…..which I hope is not the case, b/c his next move would be to MLS and I don’t know what a 30-yr old Ronaldo would look like without any pace….haha.

Keep marchin’ forward Reds! Don’t look back…something very scary and Blue is coming for you…
