Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has came out and stated in the press that he won’t be making any more signings this summer.
That means the much expected replacement for the retired Paul Scholes won’t be arriving this summer.
Satisfied
Speaking after the friendly victory over MLS side Chicago Fire he told press: “ We are always looking for good quality players,”
“We started the season with the players we have and I am satisfied with that. We are not looking at the moment but we are looking at combinations of central midfielders now at the club.”
The central midfield is probably United’s weakest area of the team and after losing Scholes it’s now even weaker. He may not have played every game but he did still have something left to contribute to the team.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s options are really not all that good. Last season the Red Devils won the Premier League but this season will be even harder.
Options
So Sir Alex is going to use his existing midfielders. He is a great manager, maybe even the greatest English football has ever seen but I believe he has dropped the ball on this one. The United midfield is weak and opposition teams know that.
Energetic
I think the best central midfielder United have to offer is Darren Fletcher. The Scot has proved to be a very consistent performer over the last few seasons and cemented his place in the United team.
Inconsistent
Brazilian midfielder Anderson arrived with a big reputation and big price tag. He was suppose to be the future of the United midfield but he has never been able to find any sort of consistency.
England international Michael Carrick has also had a similar problems in recent seasons. He was previously considered as a player who could make things happen from the centre of the pitch but he seems to be doing that less and less.
Older
At times last season Sir Alex decided to play Ryan Giggs in central midfield. He can be effective as a temporary stopgap. However at 37 he is not a long-term solution and is starting to show his age.
Young
There is even a theory that youngster Tom Cleverley may get his chance in the centre of midfield, after impressing on-loan at Wigan Athletic last season. However he has only one full season of Premier League football under his belt.
Normal
United currently don’t possess a special midfielder, they are all pretty much bog standard players with no unique qualities. They may be good enough to challenge for the Premier League title next season but that midfield won’t stand up against the best in Europe.
Special
The reason Manchester United have been linked with players such as Wesley Sneijder, Samir Nasri and Luka Modric is that all those players are capable of producing pieces of skill from the centre of midfield.
Every great team needs a midfield playmaker who can dictate the play, produce a defence splitting pass or score a goal from nothing. The current United central midfield players don’t do that on a regular enough basis.
New
United always have the option of playing Ashley Young in the centre of midfield or as a second striker and using him as the playmaker. They could even deploy Wayne Rooney in the same way.
Trust
United boss Sir Alex must have seen something in training that everybody else hasn’t. The Scot must have something up his sleeve if he is saying that the club aren’t going to sign anybody. United fans you’ll just have to trust the Scot’s judgement on this one!
Should have Manchester United signed a new central midfielder?
