Canada are hoping to kick off their CONCACAF Gold Cup with all three points in their opening game against El Salvador this week, with the Reds favourites to come out on top.
Boasting a considerably stronger squad than that of their opposition, the North American outfit cannot afford to drop points as they have a tricky group to navigate their way out of, but could go through as the best-placed loser, so adding to their points tally is essential.
Canada’s squad isn’t exclusively from the country either, far form it. They have talent based in Europe as well as the MLS, so they are a much more formidable outfit than in the past. As for their opposition, El Salvador are likely to be the group whipping boys, and their task will be to come out of the tournament with some dignity.
The South Americans haven’t won more than one game in the tournament for 30 years, so they aren’t being fancied to do much in this summer’s Gold Cup.
