England boss Fabio Capello has labelled Joey Barton ‘dangerous’ and said the midfielder will not play for the national team under his reign.
Barton, who has repeatedly claimed he is the best midfielder in the country, was capped once by England in 2007, but Capello has said that because of his poor disciplinary record, he will not be in an England squad again while he is in charge.
The 28-year-old has been transfer listed by his English Premier League club Newcastle, another issue which Capello pointed to as a reason not to include him.
“I think Joey Barton is a good player but he is a dangerous player because sometimes on the pitch you can play 10 v 11 because he might get sent off,” Capello told the Daily Mirror. “That is the problem you face with him.”
“When a player is fighting with his club it is normal to stay outside. The relationship between club and player is important.”
However, Capelllo was more complimentary about ageing Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard, saying the 33-year-old was still worthy of a place in the national team.
“(Lampard) is a very important player,” Capello said. “He is really good. I substituted him against Switzerland because we were losing and a manager needs to find a solution.”
As Capello ponders his squad to face the Netherlands in a friendly at Wembley on August 10, another headache is the future of Scott Parker, whose club West Ham was relegated to the Championship at the end of last season.
But while Capello said it was not ideal that central midfielder Parker was not playing top flight football, the manager stressed he would still be considered for an England spot even if he could not find a move back into the Premier League.
“It is important for (Parker) to play in the Premier League,” Capello said.
“I know he is really serious. He is a focused guy. It is no problem but they play more games than the -Premier League. If I find a really good player in the ¬Championship I will pick him. Why not?”
“It is no problem but I hope for him and for me he will play in the ¬Premier League.”
After their friendly against the Netherlands, England face Bulgaria and Wales in two crucial Euro 2012 qualifiers in September.
