England will need a new captain for Wednesday’s friendly against Ghana after John Terry and five other players were released from the squad.
Chelsea’s Terry was controversially reappointed as skipper by coach Fabio Capello ahead of England’s Euro 2012 2-0 qualifying win over Wales on Saturday.But the centre-back will not play against Ghana at Wembley. Terry’s club colleagues Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard have also been released, along with Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney and Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson.All six players are expected to be involved in Champions League quarter-final action for their respective clubs on April 5 and 6.Dawson’s Spurs teammates Aaron Lennon, Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe did not feature in England’s 2-0 win at the Millennium Stadium and have been retained for the Ghana match.Gareth Barry is the most senior player left in the squad, but the Manchester City midfielder did not feature against Wales.
