England coach Fabio Capello plans to hold talks with Wayne Rooney over his behaviour outside a nightclub last week and will not tolerate any of his players stepping out of line.
With England producing such a dismal performance at the World Cup, Capello has a big enough task on his hands to win back the support of the nation as they prepare for the start of the European Championship qualifying campaign.
The last thing the Italian coach needs right now is his players attracting the wrong headlines on the front pages, especially a key player like Rooney.
The Manchester United striker was caught on camera outside a nightclub in Manchester urinating against a wall in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Rooney was also photographed smoking a cigarette and wandering around the city centre singing football songs as he was out with wife Coleen and friends.
Although Rooney will not face charges over his behaviour, his club manager Sir Alex Ferguson was said to be fuming with the striker.
Capello was also disgusted to read about Rooney’s actions and will make a point of letting him know his feelings when the squad meet up on Monday ahead of Wednesday’s friendly against Hungary at Wembley.
“I read something about Rooney in the paper and I know Sir Alex Ferguson was not happy about this. I will speak with Rooney,” Capello said.
“I always spoke with the players and told them they were really important. They always have to be careful at every moment.
“I always speak with the players and when we meet up I will speak with Rooney and say this is not good.
“Everyone has different reactions when you lose. I prefer to stay home while others go out. Everyone chooses a different reaction.”
Capello is likely to ring the changes when he picks his first squad since England’s World Cup flop.
With Emile Heskey already announcing his retirement from the international game and David James set to be axed from the squad, Capello is ready to give young players a chance to cement their place in the team.
The Italian admits knows where the weaknesses are in his team and is determined to put them right over the next two-years.
Capello added: “The squad will have some new players, some young players.
“It will be an interesting game (against Hungary) and you need to create the group, because the first game for qualification is in September.
“I have confidence in my team because we start a new season. The players are good and can play like they did in the qualification for the World Cup.
“We have to play the qualification for the Euros with the same mentality and spirit that we played before.”
Capello insists he was right to leave out both Manchester City winger Adam Johnson and Arsenal forward Theo Walcott for the World Cup in South Africa, but expects the talented duo to play a big part in the Euro qualifiers.
“Adam Johnson said he didn’t breathe during his game (friendly against Mexico). He was excited to play at Wembley. For this reason I thought he was not ready to stay with us. He was too young,” Capello said.
“Theo Walcott was really important for the qualification for the World Cup. When he arrived after the shoulder operation it was not good and there were problems. He was not ready.”
