England boss Fabio Capello believes he has learnt from the country’s poor showing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Capello saw his side bow out in the round of 16 to an impressive Germany side but feels that his players were too fatigued during the tournament in South Africa.
He said holidays are important for players to refresh and recharge their batteries – ironically ahead of a Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland at Wembley on Saturday that comes at the end of a gruelling English Premier League season.
“I learnt a lot after the World Cup,” Capello said.
“I learned that the players arrived tired at the end of the season. I learned that also they don’t need a lot of games before they play the first game in the Euro or the World Cup. Players, after the last game they play need a minimum ten days, two weeks off holiday.”
Capello explained how he will do things differently in the build-up to Euro 2012 if England qualify, with players to go on holiday before the event in Poland and Ukraine kicks off.
“I think if we play the Euros in Poland and Ukraine I will want to see the players for two weeks – ten days – they will go to holiday and afterwards they will start preparation for Euros for the games,” he said.
“I think on holiday it’s good to recover their energy and minds. This is very important because they try and stay focused, focused, focused for a long time and they use a lot of energy, mind energy.”
England captain John Terry, who recently won the armband back from Rio Ferdinand, cleared the air about any suggested tension between his fellow defender.
“I made contact with Rio when it was given back to me and there’s no problems between us at all as there wasn’t before when he got the armband,” Terry said.
“We fully support each other. As an experienced player he’s got an awful lot to give in the dressing rooms anyway, which he’ll naturally do along with Lamps (Frank Lampard) and Joe Hart and Scott Parker, so that’s more than welcomed by me that everyone has their say and their input.”
Switzerland defender Philippe Senderos, who plies his trade at club level with Fulham, also spoke in the build-up to the match, admitting that defeating England on home soil will be difficult.
“We know that tomorrow night is going to be a big task,” Senderos said.
“England are in a good position in the group and are doing well. We know the quality of the players that we’re up against. We’re going to have to be up for the game right from the first minute.”
