Manchester City came from behind to hammer Wolves 5-2 in the Carling Cup, while Blackburn Rovers edged Newcastle United in a thriller.
Hosts Wolverhampton Wanderers led courtesy of a Nenad Milijas goal 17 minutes into the fourth-round tie at Molineux.
They appeared set to hold the lead going into the half-time break, but City had other ideas.
First Adam Johnson equalised on 37 minutes, with Samir Nasri netting two minutes later to make it 2-1 to the visitors.
Edin Dzeko then scored less than 60 seconds from the kick-off, transforming the deficit into a two-goal lead.
It got worse for Wolves after the break, as Dorus De Vries’ own-goal and Dzeko’s second made it 5-1, with 25 minutes still to play.
Jamie O’Hara pulled one back for Wolves moments after City’s fifth hit the back of the net, but the hosts proved unable to mount a comeback.
Also on Wednesday, Blackburn gave up the lead three times before finally overcoming Newcastle 4-3 at Ewood Park.
Ruben Rochina opened the scoring for Blackburn five minutes into the match, with Yakubu Aiyegbeni making it 2-0 from the penalty spot just past the hour mark.
Still trailing going into second-half injury time, Newcastle appeared set to depart the competition, before Danny Guthrie’s 93rd-minute strike gave the visitors a glimmer of hope.
And Yohan Cabaye kept Newcastle in contention, forcing extra-time when he scored in the sixth minute of added time.
Morten Gamst Pedersen restored Blackburn’s lead on 98 minutes, but Newcastle refused to submit, and Peter Lovenkrands made it 3-3 from the penalty spot.
The entertaining tie looked to be heading toward a shootout, when fullback Gael Givet bagged a winner for the home side in the last minute of extra-time.
Elsewhere, Chelsea squeezed past Everton 2-1, thanks to a Daniel Sturridge winner in the 115th-minute at Goodison Park.
Nicolas Anelka missed an early penalty for Chelsea, before Salomon Kalou put the visitors in front on 37 minutes.
They lost goalkeeper Ross Turnbull to a straight red for a foul inside the box on 57 minutes, but substitute Petr Cech kept out the resulting spot-kick from Leighton Baines.
Louis Saha forced extra-time when he equalised for Everton, who then had Royston Drenthe sent off.
Sturridge bagged the winner with five minutes remaining in overtime, saving his side from the lottery of a shootout.
Finally, a Luis Suarez brace saw Liverpool come from behind to win 2-1 at Stoke City, who had led through Kenwyne Jones’ 44th-minute header at the Britannia Stadium.
