Corinthians have announced former Brazil left-back Roberto Carlos is leaving the club for a lucrative move to Russia.
The 37-year-old was the subject of angry protests by the Brazilian club’s supporters after their shock first-round exit in the Copa Libertadores last Wednesday to Colombian side Deportes Tolima, although Carlos did not play in the second-leg match.
Corinthians president Andres Sanches said despite being assured of his safety, Carlos – who made 370 appearances for Real Madrid in an 11-year spell at the Bernabeu – had decided to leave Brazil.
“We gave him all our assurances here at Corinthians. He has his own motives,” Sanches said.
“He’s a guy of (37) already, he received a good offer from abroad and by mutual accord we decided to free him.”
Reports in Brazilian media stated Carlos had joined Russian Premier League side Anzhi Makhachkala in deal worth five million euros a season.
Carlos and his former Brazil teammate Ronaldo had been the prime subjects of fan abuse after the early cup exit, with supporters throwing stones at the team’s bus as it arrived at their training ground with players on board.
