Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher signed a two-year contract extension with the Premier League club on Friday.
Carragher, 32, would have been out of contract at the end of this season but the centre-back is now likely to end his career at the club he joined as a schoolboy.
His decision to stay on is a boost to Reds boss Roy Hodgson at a difficult time for the team, who are languishing in the relegation zone ahead of Sunday’s derby against Everton.
Merseyside-born Carragher has been a key member of the side since making his debut in 1997 and is currently sixth in the list of all-time Liverpool appearances, having played 641 times so far.
He has won 10 major honours with the Reds, including two FA Cups, two League Cups, a UEFA Cup and the Champions League.
The veteran defender held a testimonial against Everton at Anfield last month and is currently taking his coaching badges.
