Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick took part in an open training session on Saturday just 24 hours after being ruled out for two weeks with an ankle injury.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had expected Carrick to miss Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Chelsea at Wembley and the start of the Premier League season as a result of the injury he suffered in a friendly against an Irish League eleven on Wednesday.
But the former Tottenham star was at Old Trafford for the training work-out in front of the club’s fans and looked to be moving freely during the session.
It remains to be seen if Carrick is fit enough for Sunday’s match, but twins Rafael and Fabio da Silva – who have been suffering with food poisoning – also took part in training and could be in contention to feature against Chelsea.
