Veteran midfielder Lee Carsley announced Wednesday that he will be leaving Birmingham at the end of the season.
The former Everton midfielder has spent two years at St Andrew’s and was a key figure for much of that time. But he struggled to get into the side of late, partly because of an ankle injury but also because of the form of Lee Bowyer and Barry Ferguson.
Carsley, 36, said: “I came to the club to help them back into the Premiership and then to stay there.
“I have had two fantastic years at the Blues and I would like to thank the management and the fans for all their support.
“I will now look to help another club achieve success and I relish another challenge.”
Carsley played a key part in Birmingham’s promotion campaign last season, helping them to runners-up spot in the Championship, and was voted players’ player of the year.
Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is hoping to significantly strengthen his squad during the close season although it now seems the transfer finance provided by the club’s Hong Kong owner, Carson Yeung, will not be anywhere near the 40-million-pound (60.7-million-dollar) figure he trumpeted when he took over last year.
