Napoli forward Edinson Cavani has rubbished comparisons that he is similar to Diego Maradona.
Maradona is viewed as a legend by fans of the Naples-based club after he spearheaded them to Serie A titles in 1986/87 and 1989/1990, as well as continental success in the UEFA Cup in 1989.
But Cavani denies he is built in the mould of Maradona, despite striking an incredible 29 goals in all competitions this season as he helped Napoli up the Serie A table, into third place, just three points behind table toppers AC Milan.
“Diego is unique,” Cavani said.
“Diego is a very difficult player to imitate as a football and as a person.”
“I never compare myself to Diego because he was an idol here and like the Neapolitans says, he was a God for this city.”
Cavani insists he is not thinking about the comparisons, instead declaring that his focus is firmly placed on helping Napoli to a third Serie A title.
“I am thinking about giving the maximum and leaving a mark both in people’s memories and in Napoli’s history,” he said.
