Malawi took an early lead in Group C of the CECAFA Cup after a 2-0 win over Kenya in Dar es Salaam on Monday.

Kenya started the match with speed as they enjoyed possession, but failed to capitalise on their share of the ball by converting it into goals.

Jamal Mohammed was at the centre of the Kenyan midfield as he stringed passes together, but none of the chances created were converted.

And they were made to pay in the 24th minute, when John Banda pounced on a cross that caught Kenya’s defence flat-footed and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 1-0.

As the second half kicked off, Kenya seemed to struggle to get back into the game, having to deal with constant attacks from their opponents.

Kenyan efforts did not pay off as Malawi captain Joseph Kamwendo dimmed their hopes with a second goal courtesy of a penalty in the 61st minute.

Malawi lead Group C with three points, while Ethiopia and Sudan are tied for second on one point each after they drew 1-1 in their tournament opener.

Elsewhere on Monday, Uganda continued their unbeaten start to the tournament with a 4-0 thrashing of Somalia.
