Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech will be out for three to four weeks after he injured his knee in a training mishap.
Cech, the Blues’ player of the season last campaign, will miss English Premier League matches against West Brom, Norwich, Sunderland and possible reigning champions Manchester United.
The injury will also rule Cech out of Chelsea’s opening Champions League game and the Czech Republic’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Scotland on September 3.
“Cech fell awkwardly with his weight on top of him. We expected much worse when we saw the incident,” Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas said.
Chelsea are already on the back foot having dropped two points away to Stoke on Sunday, with Villas-Boas to select from understudies Hilario or Ross Turnbull to replace Cech between the sticks.
“We will make a full decision on the goalkeeper on Friday. We have two goalkeepers, one will start and the other on the bench,” Villas-Boas said.
