A Jermain Defoe brace was not enough for Tottenham to pull off a win at FC Twente in their Champions League’s Group A clash, with the game ending 3-3.
But it did not stop Harry Redknapp’s men finishing on top of Group A, as Inter Milan went down 3-0 at Werder Bremen in Group A’s other fixture on Tuesday.
When they walked off the pitch at Enschede, Tottenham had taken a point, wrapped up an easier ride through the knockout stages and set a new Champions League record becoming the first club to score two or more goals in each of their group matches.
The first goal of the game, however, was not of the English Premier League club’s making.
Tottenham hit the lead in the 12th minute through an own goal credited to Twente defender Peter Wisgerhof, though in truth it was entirely the fault of veteran goalkeeper Sander Boschker.
Wisgerhof played an innocuous back pass to the 40-year-old shot-stopper, but he scuffed his attempted clearing kick and could only watch on as the ball rolled across the line.
Midfielder Denny Landzaat – a former player in the Premier League with Wigan – equalised for Twente 10 minutes later, despite having to take his penalty kick for a foul from Spurs left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto twice.
Tottenham regained the lead two minutes after the break through Defoe, who finished off superbly after being fed by substitute Aaron Lennon for his first goal since August.
Rosales brought Twente level once more on 56 minutes, greeting Theo Janssen’s cross with a terrific header that Spurs goalkeeper Gomes could do little about.
The entertaining match took another twist three minutes later when Defoe put the Spurs ahead for the third time.
The England international was quick to pounce on a loose rebound from Wilson Palacios’ blocked shot and thumped a strike past Boschker.
But Morocco international Nacer Chadli made it 3-3 on 64 minutes with a sublime free kick that curled and tucked inside the left post.
Chadli’s goal ensured Twente finished third in Group A with six points and will therefore continue their European campaign in the Europa League.
Lennon had earlier replaced Jermaine Jenas after he aggravated his calf injury in the 34th minute.
Bizarrely, Jenas was booked by the referee for time-wasting while limping off the pitch, meaning the midfielder will be unavailable for Tottenham’s opening match of the knockout stages regardless of his fitness.
Niko Kranjcar, making a rare start for Spurs, also suffered an injury and was replaced deep in the second half by Peter Crouch.
Tottenham finish on top of Group A with 11 points, with Inter sealing second place one point behind.
Werder take last place with five points, despite clinching their first win of the group stages.
