Champions League round-up

The shock of this round of Champions League games came at the Giuseppe Meazza, as former-European Champions Inter were beaten 1-0 by Turkish side Trabzonspor.

The only goal of the game came in the 76th minute, Czech full-back Ondrej Celustka scoring after Halil Altintop’s effort had hit the crossbar.

Elsewhere Spanish giants Real Madrid started their European campaign with a 1-0 victory at Dinamo Zagreb.

It wasn’t a walk in the park for Los Blancos but they made the breakthrough in the 53rd minute through a stunning strike from Argentina international Angel Di Maria.

Real finished the game with ten men as Brazilian full-back Marcelo was dismissed in the 73rd minute for a second bookable offence.

Manchester City and Napoli kicked-off their maiden Champions League campaigns with a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium. Both clubs struck the woodwork in the first half before the second half saw a goal a piece.

The visitors took the lead on 69 minutes, Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani coolly finishing past Joe Hart. City were back on level terms six minutes later as Aleksandar Kolarov fired home a superb free-kick.

City’s neighbours Manchester United drew 1-1 at Portuguese side Benfica. The home side took the lead in the 24th minute through a brilliant effort from striker Oscar Cardozo. Veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs fired home a superb equaliser to rescue a point for United.

Bayern Munich claimed a 2-0 victory at Spanish side Villarreal. The visitors took the lead in the 7th minute, young midfielder Toni Kroos finding the top right hand corner with a well hit shot. Bayern confirmed the win in the 76th minute as Brazilian Rafinha drilled home the Germans second of the game.

Swiss side Basel claimed three points with a 2-1 victory over Romanian side Otelul Galati. Basel opened the scoring through a Fabian Frei header in the 39th minute. Marius Pena equalised for the visitors from close range in the 58th minute.

In the 82nd minute Basel striker Marco Streller was brought down in the penalty area by Adrian Salageanu and the defender was dismissed.

Striker Alexander Frei then slotted home from the spot. The Swiss side were also reduced to ten men with two minutes remaining, Benjamin Huggel receiving his marching orders after picking up his second yellow card.

Lille and CSKA Moscow drew 2-2 in an entertaining encounter. The French champions took the lead on the stroke of half-time as striker Moussa Sow scored with a clever effort. The French club doubled their lead in the 57th minute, midfielder Benoit Pedretti curling a superb effort into the top right corner of the net.

The visitors were back in the game on 72 minutes though as CSKA striker Seydou Doumbia scored from close range. And the striker was on hand to equalise in the 90th minute after good work from Alan Dzagoev.

Ajax and Lyon drew a blank in the Amsterdam Arena. Ajax midfielder Theo Janssen was the biggest threat to the French side but even his good work couldn’t breakthrough the solid Lyon backline.
