Championship clubs clamour for Shelvey

Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey may be allowed to move to the Championship on loan with Blackpool and Middlesbrough both interested.

However Kenny Dalglish has yet to decide whether or not Shelvey will be allowed to go out on loan for the remainder of the season with Liverpool facing a fixture frenzy of five games 14 days.

A regular run of games would help the 20-year old’s development with the midfielder already having spent two months of the season on loan at Blackpool, where he netted six times in 10 appearances, but Dalglish is wary of leaving his side short of options in midfield.

Despite Steven Gerrard not 100 percent fit and the long term injury to Lucas which culminated with Shelvey being recalled by Dalglish earlier in the season, Blackpool secretary Matt Williams and manager Ian Holloway are hopeful of a return for the player.

“We have been told that Liverpool won’t let Jonjo out until Gerrard is completely fit,” Williams said.

“Jonjo wants to come to Blackpool and we want him here, and we will keep stalking Liverpool until we get him.”

“We are in close contact with Liverpool’s director of football Damien Comolli and we hope we will be able to get Jonjo back at some stage.”

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway said: “I know what the lad is capable of and I really like him.”

“He made a big impression when he was here and he wouldn’t have gone back had there not been an injury at Liverpool. We’ll keep monitoring it and hope that we might be able to get something done.”

However Blackpool will need to move quickly if Shelvey becomes available as Championship and promotion rivals Middlesbrough look to steal in on a move, with manager Tony Mowbary stating his interest in the player.

“I think there is a possibility of something happening on that, but I’m very wary of going on record about another club’s footballer because Kenny Dalglish is keeping his squad intact and protecting his football club,” Mowbray said.

“If that changes then there might be a situation where Shelvey will have choices.”

“From what I’m hearing he’s got lots of choices in the Championship so let’s wait and see. We would welcome a boy with his talent.”

Shelvey has made just two starts and four appearances from the substitutes bench for Liverpool since returning from his loan spell at Blackpool.
