Championship: Norwich City 3 Bristol City 1

Norwich City rose to second on the Championship table with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Bristol City on Monday.

The hosts looked to be settling for a 1-1 draw after Albert Adomah’s 65th-minute equaliser for Bristol, but a late burst of activity ensured Norwich the three points.

Henri Lansbury snatched back Norwich’s lead in the 89th minute and Andrew Surman added another to seal the result in added time.

Norwich leapfrog Swansea into second place on the table, seven points behind leaders Queens Park Rangers, after the Swans fell 2-1 at Derby County on Saturday.

Bristol could not have asked for a worse start at Carrow Road after defender Liam Fontaine felled Wesley Hoolahan in the area to concede a penalty in just the second minute.

Grant Holt crashed his spot kick into the top-right corner to give the hosts the early ascendancy.

But Adomah, who picked up the opener in Bristol’s 2-1 defeat of Portsmouth last week, levelled on the counter-attack after substitute Jamal Campbell Ryce released him with a terrific through ball.

That seemed to be enough to secure a point for the visitors as the Canaries wasted chance after chance, but Lansbury stepped up on the cusp of injury time to restore their advantage.

Hoolahan chipped through to Lansbury, before the on-loan Arsenal man bobbled the ball into the air and launched a magnificent volley into the right corner.

Norwich still had time for one more, which came following a defensive error by Bristol midfielder Steven Caulker.

Caulker lost possession under pressure deep on the left, allowing Surman to race through onto goal and slide his shot underneath David James just before the final whistle.
