A late goal from debutant Eddie Nketiah was enough to see Leeds United clinch victory against Brentford on Wednesday evening, and in doing so remain top of the Championship.
The Arsenal loanee had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes before giving his new side the lead, having linked up with fellow summer arrival Helder Costa.
Swansea City are level with Marcelo Bielsa’s men at the summit after they eased past Queens Park Rangers, while Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday are just a point behind after home wins against Millwall and Luton Town
respectively.
Light work
The Cottagers made light work of the Lions, with Ivan Cavaleiro bagging a brace – Anthony Knockeart and Aleksander Mitrovic also on the scoring sheet, while Kadeem Harris scored the only goal of the game at Hillsborough.
Charlton Athletic had to settle for a point after Albert Adomah gave Nottingham Forest a share of the spoils at The Valley, while it was also 1-1 at The Hawthorns where West Bromwich Albion took on Reading.
Bristol City beat Derby County at Pride Park, while Birmingham City bounced back from their trouncing at the City Ground by beating Barnsley.
Preston North End piled more misery on Stoke City, and in particular Jack Butland who was at fault for both the hosts first and second goals in a 3-1 victory for Alex Neil’s side.
Bouncing back
After losing their first two games, Blackburn Rovers now have back-to-back wins – Hull City on the receiving end of their latest triumph.
Managerless Huddersfield Town suffered yet another defeat – their nineteenth in all competitions this calendar year – after Junior Hoillet clinched victory for Cardiff City in South Wales.
Finally, Middlesbrough recorded their first victory under Jonathan Woodgate, with Britt Assombalonga firing in the winner against Wigan Athletic.
Saturday
There is a mouth watering fixture to get the action underway on matchday five, with Derby hosting West Brom, while leaders Leeds travel to bottom of the table Stoke.
Both sides have been tipped to be there or thereabouts come the end of the season, though they could be twelve points apart after just five games if the visitors get the win.
Huddersfield will hope to stop the rot as they host Reading, while fellow slow starters Luton head to Barnsley.
Fulham have the chance to move into the top two as they take on Forest, with Wednesday at Preston and Brentford making the short trip to Charlton.
In arguably the pick of the rest of Saturday’s games Blackburn take on Cardiff, while on Sunday it’s Swansea versus Birmingham at the Liberty Stadium.
The Swans were never really in the running to secure an immediate return to the top flight last term, but can be backed at 11/2 to seal promotion this time around.
