Championship: Sheffield Wednesday 1 Leeds United 1

Michael Tonge’s stunning late equaliser earned Leeds a 1-1 draw in their Championship clash at Sheffield Wednesday on Friday.

However, the game was marred by ugly scenes after Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was struck in the face by a Leeds fan following Tonge’s leveller at Hillsborough.

The incident seems certain to be investigated by the Football Association.

Jay Bothroyd, on loan from English Premier League side Queens Park Rangers, put Wednesday ahead with his first goal for the club on the stroke of half-time.

The one-time England international, who had not scored a goal since November 2011, headed home the opener from a Michail Antonio throw in, much to the delight of the home fans.

Leeds struggled to find any rhythm throughout the match and seemed likely to leave Hillsborough without a share of the spoils.

But a powerful 77th minute strike from Tonge sent the away support into raptures.

The former Stoke and Sheffield United man found himself unmarked outside the penalty area and unleashed a delightful half-volley past the helpless Kirkland, who was then attacked.

Wednesday are without a win in eight games and languish in the relegation zone of the Championship, while Leeds are unbeaten in five league fixtures as they look to secure promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since the 2003/04 season.

If i kad ben at the match
i would have given that cowardly Leeds hooligan a good thrashing for attacking the Sheffield keeper.
