Cardiff City stole a 1-0 victory over West Ham in their season-opener in the Championship on Sunday, courtesy of Kenny Miller’s late winner.
The Welsh side were on the back foot for much of the second half, with midfielder Peter Whittingham forced to clear off his own line late on, before Miller scored the winner in the 90th minute.
Substitute Rudy Gestede’s run down the right culminated in a pass to Miller, who was forced to take a touch away from goal, before turning and firing a powerful shot on target.
Hammers goalkeeper Robert Green got a hand on the shot, but could only brush it into his own net, as the Cardiff fans celebrated behind the goals with the former Rangers striker their newest hero in his full debut for the club.
The goal capped an entertaining battle between the two sides, but ultimately ended for the Hammers in defeat in what was Sam Allardyce’s first game in charge.
However, West Ham had a flurry of chances on goal, mainly in the second half, with their best opportunity coming from James Tomkinson’s header – denied only by the desperate knee of Whittingham on the goal line with 10 minutes remaining.
