Cardiff City’s decision to bring Craig Bellamy to the club paid more dividends on Sunday, when he scored the late winner over Swansea City.
The Welsh derby at Liberty Stadium was heading for a scoreless draw before the former Manchester City star Bellamy fired a curling shot past Swansea goalkeeper Dorus de Vries from outside the penalty area in the 86th minute, which deflected into the net off the right post.
Bellamy was gracious following the victory, admitting his personal game did not warrant a goal.
“Overall in the game I didn’t deserve it. But no one will remember that performance, just the win. The result is great and an invaluable three points for us and where we want to go,” Bellamy told the BBC.
The goal was enough to see the Championship powerhouse pick up a 1-0 victory in their promotion quest, which propelled them to third, one point from the automatic promotion spots.
Cardiff leaped above Swansea with the win, while the losers on Sunday dropped one spot to fifth.
