Chris Burke’s injury-time winner saw Birmingham snatch a 2-1 win at home to Burnley on Tuesday, while Cardiff drew 1-1 at Coventry.
Hosts Birmingham led from the first minute of the match at St Andrews through a goal from Jean Beausejour.
Nikola Zigic teed up Burke for a shot on goal and when Burnley goalkeeper Lee Grant could only tip the ball onto the bar, Chile international Beausejour was on hand to smash home the rebound.
Zigic and Keith Treacy both missed chances to extend the lead throughout the first half.
Birmingham came to regret their profligacy four minutes into the second half, when Marvyn Bartley seized on a loose ball to equalise for Burnley with a deflected shot from 20 yards out.
Zigic, Keith Fahey and Marlon King all went close to restoring Birmingham’s lead, but with time running out, it looked like struggling Burnley would hang on to end a sequence of three defeats in succession.
But in the 91st minute, David Murphy’s clever ball released Burke inside the area, and the former Rangers man found the back of the net to snatch all three points for the home side.
Birmingham’s first win in four matches sees them move to eighth, while Burnley are down in 21st, two points outside the relegation zone after four consecutive defeats.
Also on Tuesday, Coventry came from behind to draw 1-1 at home to Cardiff City.
Lucas Jutkiewicz was the man to equalise for the home side in the 61st minute at the Ricoh Arena, cancelling out Peter Whittingham’s opener for Cardiff.
The draw was enough for Malky Mackay’s team to move above Middlesbrough and into third place on the table.
Coventry meanwhile are second bottom, five points from safety and without a win in seven matches.
