Leicester City enjoyed their second win of the new Championship season on Saturday after earning a 3-2 home triumph over Southampton.
A goal from Darius Vessell gave the hosts the early ascendancy, before Richard Wellens extended the lead at the 22-minute mark.
Dan Harding pulled one back for the visitors but when Richard Lambert scored an own goal deep into first-half stoppage time Leicester were 3-1 up at the break.
Southampton refused to lie down, and a David Connolly goal eight minutes into the second half was due reward for the visitors.
But Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men were too good and held on for all three points, with Southampton falling to second in the table after the loss.
Brighton capitalised on their slip-up, with goals from Craig Noone and Ryan Harley powering the League One champions to a 2-0 home win over Peterborough United, a result that moved them one point clear on top of the league.
Derby County suffered their first loss of the season when they fell 2-1 to Burnley at Pride Park, a brace from Charlie Austin cancelling out Theo Robinson’s goal for the hosts.
Middlesbrough remain in fourth place after they played out a 1-1 draw with Coventry at The Riverside and Crystal Palace climbed to fifth thanks to a 1-1 draw at home against Blackpool.
Late goals to Jason Scotland and Keith Andrews helped Ipswich take a 2-1 win over Leeds, Doncaster City and Bristol City drew 1-1, while Hull enjoyed a 1-0 win over Reading courtesy of a Robbie Brady goal in the 73rd minute.
In other matches, Cardiff City and Portsmouth drew 1-1 at Fratton Park and Millwall played out a goalless draw with Barnsley at The New Dell.
