Championship leaders West Ham United were thumped 5-1 by Ipswich Town on Tuesday while second-placed Southampton drew.
West Ham fans travelled to Ipswich in a buoyant mood after the transfer deadline-day signings of Nicky Maynard, Ricardo Vaz Te and Ravel Morrison.
But they were quickly brought back down to earth after a five-star performance from the struggling Ipswich.
Michael Chopra opened the scoring after three minutes before a frantic period before half-time saw three goals scored in as many minutes.
Irish forward Daryl Murphy put Ipswich 2-0 ahead and although Jack Collison responded quickly for West Ham, a Lee Martin penalty saw Paul Jewell’s side lead 3-1 at the break.
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas bagged a second-half double as Ipswich ran rampant to win their first match in eight.
Southampton could have moved to the top of the table if they had of defeated Cardiff City, but the battle between second and third ended in a 1-1 draw.
Craig Conway gave the Welsh outfit a first-half lead but Rickie Lambert’s penalty 12 minutes into the second half ensured both sides shared the spoils.
Birmingham City jumped to fourth after they came from behind to defeat Leeds United 4-1 at Elland Road.
Ross McCormack’s 13th league goal of the season put Leeds in front after 19 minutes but what followed was amazing as Nikola Zigic scored four times, including three in the space of seven second-half minutes to put further pressure on Leeds manager Simon Grayson.
Blackpool climbed to sixth after late goals from Kevin Phillips and Gary Taylor-Fletcher gave them a 2-1 win over bottom-placed Coventry City, while Nottingham Forest – who sit second from bottom – suffered yet another defeat as a Jay Rodriguez double led Burnley to a 2-0 away win.
Other results saw Barnsley defeat Derby County 3-2 while Watford won 2-0 at Millwall.
Crystal Palace and Brighton and Hove Albion played out a 1-1 draw while Hull City’s Yorkshire derby against the Doncaster Rovers finished goalless.
