Nottingham Forest climbed above Leeds United and into fifth in the Championship following a 1-0 win over Bristol City on Tuesday.
Occupying the last play-off berth in sixth place going into the match, Billy Davies’ Forest side were out to make it four wins from four matches.
A solitary goal from defender Luke Chambers helped them do exactly that against a Bristol City side who are now without a win since January 1.
Chambers found himself on the end of a Chris Cohen delivery from the right flank two minutes into the second half at the City Ground.
His shot from 12 yards out benefited from a slight deflection to beat Bristol City’s veteran goalkeeper David James.
Forest are now one point behind the three teams ahead of them – Swansea, Norwich and Cardiff. And, with a game in hand over the latter two, they are well placed to move into the automatic promotion places.
They have also played two matches less than Swansea and Leeds.
Elsewhere, Steve Cotterill lost to his former club as Portsmouth went down 2-1 at home to Burnley.
All the goals came in a six-minute flurry at Fratton Park, with Jay Rodriguez converting a Daniel Fox cross to open the scoring for the visitors in the 31st minute.
The lead lasted barely two minutes before former Arsenal striker Kanu created a chance for fellow Nigerian John Utaka, who smashed home the equaliser.
But Burnley were back in front just four minutes later.
Portsmouth goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown could only parry a Steven Thompson shot and former Tottenham utility Dean Marney was on hand to equalise with an acrobatic overhead kick from the rebound.
Victory takes Burnley up to ninth, while Portsmouth remain 18th and five points off the relegation zone.
A second-half brace from forward Danny Haynes helped Barnsley secure a 2-0 win away to mid-table rivals Doncaster Rovers.
