Southampton sit top of the Championship after winning on Saturday, while West Ham United recorded their first victory of the season.

A goal from veteran striker David Connolly on the half-hour mark proved to be the winner for Southampton in their 1-0 defeat of Barnsley.

Nigel Adkins’ team disposed of Leeds United on the opening day of the season.

Meanwhile, West Ham rebounded from their first-up defeat with a 1-0 win over Doncaster Rovers.

Former Bolton man Kevin Nolan’s fifth-minute strike was all that separated the two teams and gave West Ham their first win since being relegated from the top flight last season.

Brighton and Hove Albion made it two from two with a 1-0 win at Portsmouth.

Craig Mackail-Smith struck on the stroke of half-time to leave Steve Cotterill’s winless team in 16th.

A Steve Davies goal handed Derby County a 1-0 win at Watford as they too made it consecutive wins to start the season.

At the other end of the table, Leeds United remain without a point as Marvin Emnes’ goal gave Middlesbrough a 1-0 victory at Elland Road.

Coventry City are in the same position after Keith Fahey’s 73rd-minute winner secured Birmingham City a 1-0 win at home.

Elsewhere, Noel Hunt and Hal Robson-Kanu netted in Reading’s 2-0 win at Leicester City, while Matty Fryatt was on the scoresheet in Hull City’s 1-0 victory at Ipswich Town.

Jonathan Parr’s opener and an Owen Garvan own goal gave Crystal Palace a 2-0 win over Burnley.

Millwall recorded a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest thanks to goals from Darius Henderson and Liam Trotter.
