Queens Park Rangers, Cardiff and Swansea all won at the top of the Championship on Tuesday, but a late equaliser denied Nottingham Forest.
QPR maintained their five-point lead at the top of the table with a 2-0 win at home to Ipswich Town.
They were forced to wait until late on at Loftus Road, before two goals in the space of five minutes from Clint Hill and Heidar Helguson secured all three points.
Second-place Swansea kept pace thanks to a 1-0 win away to Coventry City, with Scott Dobie netting the winner with 15 minutes remaining at the Ricoh Arena.
Cardiff City beat in-form Leicester City 2-0 at home to climb above Nottingham Forest and into third.
Goals from crowd favourite Michael Chopra and Aaron Ramsey – on loan from Arsenal at his former club – inflicted Leicester’s first league defeat in eight matches.
Forest, meanwhile, were locked at 1-1 in their match at home to bottom-side Preston North End after Liverpool loanee Paul Konchesky cancelled out Barry Nicholson’s early opener for the visitors.
Forest appeared to have grabbed all three points when Chris Cohen struck two minutes into injury time, but Billy Jones salvaged a point for Preston with the latest of goals six minutes into added time.
There were frustrating draws for the other teams in the play-off berths, with fifth-placed Norwich City forced to settle for 1-1 at home to Doncaster Rovers.
The hosts led through Grant Holt, but Adam Drury’s own-goal with eight minutes remaining gifted Doncaster a draw.
Sixth-placed Leeds United led 3-2 at home to Barnsley despite going down to 10 men with the 51st-minute sending off of Bradley Johnson.
But the visitors snatched a point thanks to Kieran Trippier’s equaliser in the 82nd minute.
Derby County’s woeful form continued as they lost 1-0 at home to Hull City, while Portsmouth saw off Crystal Palace by the same scoreline.
Bristol City won 3-1 away to Watford and Reading defeated Millwall 2-1 at home.
Two goals from Joe Garner and one from Lee Miller helped Scunthorpe United come back from 2-0 down to beat relegation rivals Sheffield United 3-2.
