Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic believes that Chelsea can still win a Champions League and English Premier League double this season.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Round of 16 second-leg match against Copenhagen at Stamford Bridge, the defender said the side should still be targeting both competitions this season.
Reigning champions Chelsea are fourth on the Premier League table, but have shortened the gap to leaders Manchester United to seven points. Ancelotti’s side have a game in hand on United, and must also play Sir Alex Ferguson’s side once more this season.
Chelsea already have one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals after beating Copenhagen 2-0 in the first leg in Denmark and – despite it being against his better judgement – Ivanovic does not see why his side should not be aiming for a continental-domestic double.
“I have this dream, every player does. It is one of the biggest competitions in the world and, for me, winning the Champions League would be the biggest success in football,” he said.
“I don’t like to think like that (achieving the double) because I like to think game by game. I think we cannot say goodbye to the title but at the same time we cannot leave the Champions League on the side. For us, both are important.”
“The manager has said we have a good squad. We have to use all our power to try to stay in the league and fight until the last minute for both.”
The Serbia international’s versatility has meant he has been used in several different roles by Ancelotti, and he had a simple answer when asked where he preferred to play.
“I prefer to be on the pitch,” he said.
“I have signed a new contract. I see my future at Chelsea. I want to be ready and I want to give the maximum for the team. Which position I play in is dependent on the manager.”
