Chelsea defender David Luiz says he has faith in his ability and will not let criticism of his form and playing style affect him.
Brazil international Luiz scored Chelsea’s opening goal in a 3-0 English Premier League win over Bolton on Saturday, their first victory from six matches in all competitions.
The goal brought to an end a difficult week centre-back Luiz, who was heavily criticised for his performance in Chelsea’s 3-1 Champions League round-of-16 first leg defeat to Napoli on Tuesday.
Luiz, 24, feels the pressure has mounted on the players during their form slump due to the weight of expectation surrounding a club of Chelsea’s size.
“The guys who have never touched a ball can’t kill me,” Luiz told Chelsea TV, referring to his armchair critics.
“This is impossible. Because I know my life when I didn’t have anything, I know my life when my family needed me a lot.”
“I know my life when I left home at 14 years of age and I told them ‘I will come back one day and give you a good life’.”
“I play in a big team and when a big team doesn’t win for five games or six games, the pressure’s so, so big.”
“I believe in my job, I believe in my work every day, I believe in me. I know my football, I know my personality.”
