In what was another fiery derby showdown from Stamford Bridge, Chelsea shored up their spot in the Champions League chase as they clinched a 1-0 victory against local rivals Tottenham on Thursday night.
While the Blues might have welcomed back attacking talisman Cole Palmer here, it was Enzo Fernandez who proved to be Chelsea’s hero in west London as they Argentinian international headed home powerfully just five minuets after the interval.
Enzo Maresca’s side thought that they had doubled their advantage just seconds later but Moises Caicedo’s crisp volley was ruled out following a lengthy four-minute VAR check for a marginal offside in the build-up.
In a battle that historically produces plenty of drama, Tottenham had their own effort controversially ruled out in the second-half.
While substitute Pape Matar Sarr might have powered home his effort from 20 yards, the Spurs midfielder was adjudged to have clipped Caicedo with his studs in the middle of the park just seconds before his strike.
With Chelsea doing enough to claim local bragging rights and leave Stamford Bridge with all three points, the Blues have skyrocketed their way back into the top-four and have taken another step towards a lucrative Champions League return.
As for a struggling Tottenham, Spurs remarkably stay 14th in the standings and the pressure on Ange Postecoglou’s shoulders remains firmly at a boiling point.
On a night from Stamford Bridge that once again produced plenty of controversy, we have taken a look at the main talking points from west London.
Chelsea shore up their Champions League spot
Heading into March’s fortnight interval with a 1-0 loss at the hands of Arsenal, Maresca had made it clear that he was demanding an immediate response when his squad returned to west London here.
While the Blues might have endured a stuttering start to 2025, it appears that Thursday’s hosts have turned a much-welcomed corner over the past six weeks and they have firmly got their Champions League charge back on track.
Leapfrogging soon-to-be former Premier League champions Manchester City here, the former Leicester boss has seen his squad win five of their previous six appearances across all competitions.
Booking their Europa Conference League quarter-final spot last month as they secured a 3-1 aggregate win against Danish giants Copenhagen, it is no secret that the Blues are pencilled in as a landslide European favourite this season.
Likewise, finding some crucial defensive steel of late, that 1-0 defeat against Arsenal prior to March’s fortnight interval is the only goal that Chelsea have conceded in their last four outings.
Where next for Big Ange?
Enduring what has quickly become an infamous Premier League rut this season and breaking a string of unwanted records, there are large sections of the north London support that are making their frustrations abundantly clear.
Heading into March’s international break with a 2-0 defeat away at Fulham and firmly scrapping it out at the foot of the Premier League table, Postecoglou finds the pressure on his shoulders once again at a boiling point.
Putting just a single point on the board from any of their previous four Premier League appearances, the former Celtic boss knows that the majority of Tottenham supporters are itching for a change in the dugout this summer.
Drastically failing to find any kind of stability this season and gaining a reputation for their glaring defensive struggles, Spurs are certainly limping their way over the finishing line.
With the relationship between Tottenham fans and Postecoglou appearing to have completely broken down, the Australian tactician is now bracing himself for another public backlash.
Chelsea’s dominance in west London continue
While Chelsea might have struggled to find any kind of fluidity on their travels so far this calendar year, Maresca’s men will take plenty of positives away from their continued dominance in west London.
Overcoming their historic rivals here, Thursday’s hosts have managed to turn Stamford Bridge into somewhat of a fortress since Maresca’s arrival in the capital last summer.
Winning all of their previous six consecutive showdowns in SW6 across all competitions by an aggregate score of 12-2, Chelsea have also suffered just a single defeat in front of their own supporters since a 2-0 loss against Manchester City on the opening weekend.
Including Thursday’s gritty 1-0 victory, Maresca’s camp have also not conceded a single goal at Stamford Bridge in over 400 minuets of action.
Next up for Chelsea, the Blues face what could be another fiery London showdown when they travel to local neighbours Brentford on Sunday afternoon.
