Coming into this game it certainly seemed like Tottenham had a job on their hands to keep hold of their first leg lead, regardless of how bad of a week Chelsea have had. Alas, in the end, the Blues were able to overcome the one goal deficit – progressing into the Carabao Cup Final where they will take on Manchester City.
The comeback
Chelsea started the better of the two sides with Spurs looking nervous from the word go, as the Blues went in search of the goal that would draw them level. They finally got it around the half hour mark when N’Golo Kante smashed in a first time effort, and not long after Eden Hazard put Chelsea in full control of the tie.
Alas, they let their guard down upon the second half getting underway, with Fernando Llorente bringing Tottenham level. Courtesy of the fact that the away goal rule wasn’t in effect, alongside there being no extra time, we went straight to penalties.
The pressure grows
Christian Eriksen scored first for Spurs before Willian brought the home side level. Lamela and Azpilicueta kept things perfect, before Eric Dier shot high over the far. Jorginho scored as Kepa made a great save from Lucas Moura, leaving it all up to David Luiz. The defender stepped up and slotted the ball home, sending the Stamford Bridge crowd into a frenzy.
Tottenham will return to action on Sunday in the FA Cup against Crystal Palace, whereas Chelsea will play later that day against Sheffield Wednesday.
