Chelsea produced quite a coup by winning the chase for Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic, arguably one of the world’s most sought-after players.
The mere fact the Blues agreed to splash out £21 million on the 25-year-old, or some £17 million more than Benfica paid for him when he left Stamford Bridge, is enough to suggest Jose Mourinho sees him as a very important member of the squad.
In all fairness, Matic has made incredible progress since he was sent to Estadio da Luz two and a half years back and he could be just what the Blues were missing to lift the Premier League title.
With Chelsea just two points behind leaders Arsenal at the moment, there seems to be a lot of value in odds of 3/1 offered on the Blues to go all the way.
With Frank Lampard clearly past his prime and the likes of Ramires, Mikel and Essien not exactly impressing of late, the capture of Nemanja Matic is likely to give Jose Mourinho’s side a huge boost in their title chase.
The Serbian is not only a player who does a lot of defensive work, but he also acts as a deep-lying playmaker and has become extremely confident on the ball.
If Mourinho also succeeds in his quest to sign a world-class striker by the time the transfer window closes, Chelsea will certainly become one of the main candidates for the Premiership title.
