Chelsea are close to completing the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in the January transfer window, according to 90min. The report has claimed that the Premier League giants are on the verge of reaching an agreement with the Portuguese powerhouse over the 21-year-old Argentina international midfielder, who won the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Benfica had initially wanted Fernandez’s release clause of €120 million to be paid in full by Chelsea for a deal to be done. However, the Portuguese club will now accept payments over several instalments but totalling €130 million. If the transfer does go through, then Fernandez will become the fourth-most expensive footballer of all time and will end up as Chelsea’s most expensive signing.
Chelsea are ninth in the Premier League table at the moment with 25 points from 16 matches, seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester United. Meanwhile, Benfica currently find themselves at the top of the Portuguese Primeira Liga standings with 37 points from 14 games, five points clear of second-placed FC Porto.
