Chelsea and Liverpool linked with Vermaelen

Chelsea and Liverpool are set for a battle to secure the services of former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen, according to the Express.

The thirty year old left the Emirates Stadium for Barcelona in the summer of 2014 but has barely featured for the Catalan club, racking up just sixteen appearances in all competitions, with his only goal so far coming in the 1-0 win over Malaga back in August.

Both the Blues and the Reds could be set to make a move for the Belgium international, who is likely to call time on his spell in Spain at the end of the season.

Vermaelen played one hundred and fifty times for Arsenal over five years, and was part of the squad that won the FA Cup in 2014.

He has been capped fifty times for Belgium, and was part of their squad for the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil.
