The Telegraph is reporting that Premier League leaders Chelsea are stepping up their efforts to recruit Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.
The Blues are in the market for defensive reinforcements and it appears they have decided to make a move on the former Celtic hotshot.
Southampton are ready to consider offers in the region of £50 million and their reported interest in Mamadou Sakho is enough to suggest the Saints are already looking for van Dijk’s replacement.
The player himself is reportedly keen on moving to Stamford Bridge, where he is expected to play alongside Gary Cahill and David Luiz in a three-man defence.
Virgil van Dijk quickly developed into one of Europe’s leading defenders, putting in some very good performances while representing Groningen, Celtic and Southampton.
His suitors Chelsea resume their Premier League campaign at home against Crystal Palace and they are 2/7 favourites to claim maximum points.
