Chelsea are looking to add a left-sided centre-back to their ranks this winter and to that end, they’re currently considering a move for AS Monaco’s Benoit Badiashile as their first-choice target, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.
Badiashile is a product of the Monaco academy who earned a place in the senior squad in 2018, and since then, he’s represented the club on 135 occasions, scoring six goals and producing three assists. Still only 21, the 6’4” defender is obviously rated very highly with plenty of time ahead to develop further.
Chelsea’s interest in Badiashile comes in the wake of their inability to strike a deal with RB Leipzig for Josko Gvardiol, even though they had already agreed personal terms with the Croatia international, as well as his rising value in the market after the excellent performances he put in at the World Cup in Qatar. Apart from the Monaco youngster, Chelsea’s alternatives include Evan N’Dicka, whose contract with Eintracht Frankfurt is up at the end of the season, and Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie.
Nonetheless, the talks between Chelsea and Monaco over Badiashile are progressing and there is a belief among those familiar with the situation that the transfer will take place, with the fee set at around €35 million.
