Chelsea in for Higuain

Chelsea have entered the race to sign Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, the Mirror understands.

Reports in Spain claim that the Argentina international has emerged as a target for Jose Mourinho, who he worked with for three years at the Bernabeu.

Higuain has been linked with a move away from the Spanish capital since the end of last season, with Arsenal seemingly his most likely destination.

However, his proposed move to the Emirates has stalled, with the Spanish giants now holding out for upwards of £40m to secure his services.

Rafael Benitez’s Napoli are also interesting in signing the former River Plate man as they look to replace Edinson Cavani, who moved to Paris Saint Germain earlier this week.

Wayne Rooney remains the Blues first choice, though they are yet to make an improved offer after seeing their initial player-plus-cash bid rejected out of hand by Premier League champions Manchester United.
