According to The Athletic, Chelsea are in talks with Rennes about the possibility of signing goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Chelsea have made a large number of high-profile signings this summer – winger Hakim Ziyech from Ajax, striker Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, left-back Ben Chilwell from Leicester City and attacking midfielder Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen. The signing of Mendy would take their spending over the £250m mark.
Due to a number of poor performances from Kepa Arrizabalaga last season, many believed Chelsea would sell the Spaniard and bring in a new number one, but the club’s technical and performance advisor Petr Cech revealed last week that Kepa would be going nowhere. However, he did say that the club would look to provide him some competition, other than 38-year-old Willy Caballero.
Rennes have already rejected Chelsea’s offer in the region of £14m for Mendy, but the negotiations are still ongoing and the Londoners are increasingly confident of completing the deal soon.
