Premier League leaders Chelsea are in pole position to sign Argentine striker Mauro Icardi from Inter Milan, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 22-year-old has been in stunning form ever since he joined the Nerazzurri from Sampdoria and he is again scoring goals for fun.
Even if his current deal does not expire before June 2018, Inter Milan officials aim to offer Icardi a new and improved contract in an attempt to keep hold of his services.
However, Europe’s top clubs continue to cast admiring glances his way, with Chelsea reportedly leading the race.
The Blues will see Didier Drogba leave at the end of the season and they want Icardi to challenge Diego Costa for a starting berth.
The talented forward has bagged 23 goals in 45 Serie A appearances for Inter Milan, who can be backed at 3/5 to defeat Celtic tomorrow evening and make it to the Europa League last 16 stage.
