First of all, I’d like to apologize to those of you who woke up at 5:45 am Pacific Standard Time to watch Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur on ESPN2.
The highly anticipated match between the two London clubs was “uneventful” to say the least.
To be perfectly honest, it was one of the most boring matches of the season, and surprisingly so.
I predicted an open and high-scoring game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, but I guess it was just not meant to be.
That being said, I was not the only one to forecast goals aplenty between Chelsea and Spurs on Saturday afternoon.
In fact, the Goal.com Bet of the Day on Saturday was both teams to score at 8/13 (1.62) with William Hill.
Nonetheless, Spurs surely got the better result at Stamford Bridge.
The north London club maintained their five-point lead over Chelsea in the race for fourth place, with only eight English Premier League games remaining for each club.
Furthermore, Spurs have the easier remaining schedule between the two sides and do not have to face any team ahead of them in the table for the rest of their campaign.
On the other side of the touchline, Chelsea still have to travel to the Emirates and Anfield to battle Arsenal and Liverpool respectively.
In addition, Chelsea are still in the UEFA Champions League, which could potentially distract them from getting the results they need to finish in the top four.
Thus, at the moment, Chelsea are surely the “dark horse” to get the last Champions League qualifying place, while Spurs are in the drivers seat as they say.
“I think it’s a step in the right direction after the results that we’ve been having. Hopefully we can take that forward now and push on,” Walker told Sky Sports after Saturday’s goalless draw at Stamford Bridge.
“There’s eight games to go so it’s going to be difficult – we know that with the teams in the Premier League, it’s not easy going to places – but we’ve just got to keep believing in ourselves as a squad, as a team, and hopefully we’ll get to the top.
“I believe, with the people we’ve got in the changing room, we can destroy any team, so it’s just a matter of putting the trust in them and going to get the goals.”
Spurs’ right-back has certainly got the right attitude and confidence to propel Spurs to the Champions League for the second time in three seasons. Now it’s just a matter of getting the job done, which is much harder that in sounds, as Walker has already suggested.
Will Spurs hold off Chelsea and qualify for the UEFA Champions League in 2012-13?
